I was part of Tribo flow in 2013 and was working with John on a project. For this project we had to visit the power plant in Cincinnati! I remember every morning at 6:00 am, he had to get his coffee ( with the double shot of espresso )from Starbucks. Because of him, now I love Starbucks’s coffee especially early in the morning. I am very sorry he is not with us anymore and I will miss him and his big smile :)

Your dad loved being your dad! You brought each other the gifts of laughter, love and lessons. He was so proud of each one of you for so many reasons. A dad & daughters, a special relationship. He loved you dearly. My heart breaks that you have lost your dad, but I know good memories will be with you everyday.
Hugs & love for you always,
Mom

Sorry to hear of your sad loss. John and I were W-P classmates. We had fun whether playing tag around our grocery store or on the farm as youngsters. He was always a willing help for anyone but especially algebra, for me!

I was a first year PhD student in Italy when I came across a number of John's publications; I sent him an email asking if I could do experimental work of my thesis with him and he immediately said yes. And not only. He hosted me in his house for several months and we shared fantastic discussions on the porch every night with a glass of Gin Tanqueray with lime, which would later become my favorite cocktail. I was lucky to share so many familiar moments with him: I remember the road trip to Minnesota to the farm where he was grown up, a fantastic night at the disco in Italy where we danced until six in the morning. Gifted with a vivid and brilliant intelligence, he taught me to refine my way of approaching scientific problems. Above all, asking the “why” questions when you observe reality, I think it was one of the things he learned from Richard Feynman's thinking: the more I ask why, the deeper a thing is, the more interesting it gets.
John was a friend, a mentor, an inspirer: although the little time spent together and the distance that separates us, I will remember him among those I most admired.

So sorry to hear of John’s death. I remember the summer get together for a picnic and playing ball on the farm. With 10 in our family and 8 in yours we had two teams. Remember John selling pots and pans. He brought a pop cycle for introduction. Of course I had no money to buy. Also remember the basketball games at school that he participated in and him playing baritone in band. Always a smile on his face. Too young to die

I always remember John with a smile when he was around back home. He will be greatly missed! It was always a fun get together when he would come by and then later when some you would travel with him. It was fun to hear of what was going on in your lives and what was going on in the eastern part of the nation. I will always remember him.

My heart breaks for you girls. My deepest sympathy. I remember when I was very young hanging out at "The Farm" with Uncle John. He would let me help milk cows, sit up on the milk coolers in the milk house and he would help me find all the baby kitties in the hay loft. It's funny the things that you think about in times like these. The memories you will always have. Love to all.

Thank you for the many hours shared together, theorising, strategizing, inventing. Throughout the successes and failures, you were always cool and calm. Always choosing the simple things, yet complex in your simplicity. You gave me a gift I can never repay...a career. You gave a 17 year old kid from Zimbabwe a chance and you took a special interest in him and from colleagues we became friends and friends became family.
“How did it go John?” I’d ask...”smooth as kitty poop” you’d respond. I still picture you smoking a cigarette and drinking a cup of coffee. I remember all the lessons learned, especially the simple ones, like wedging a nickel to hold my seatbelt so it doesn’t feel as if it’s pressing against me.
I was looking forward to another catchup with you. We always had the best conversations often laughing till tears streamed down our eyes. With your untimely passing, you taught me the last lesson...never leave for tomorrow what you can do today. I cry with purpose, I will miss you and I will think of you often, but I will always keep you close to my heart.
“The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old,
But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul.
My life has been a poor attempt, to imitate the man,
I’m just a living legacy, to the leader of the band.”
Rest easy John, my hero and my mentor. Till we meet again.

The death of Dr. John Stencel profoundly saddens us. John had a tremendous impact on the Institute of Research for Technology Development (IR4TD) at the University of Kentucky
John is a friend and mentor, and as the associate director of IR4TD, I have had the distinguished honor of working closely with John. John served as IR4TD’s technical advisor. In that role has touched the lives of so many students, post-doctoral scholars, researchers, and faculty.
We should remember John not for what we have lost, but for who he was and what he achieved. John is one of those of whom it can indeed be said that he made the world a better place, both for those of us who were lucky enough to know him and for many thousands who never met him but have benefited from his work.
Erin, Kara, and Amy thank you for sharing your dad with us. He will be deeply missed.
Goodbye, John, and thank you so much for all you taught me.
I am heartbroken

This photo was taken in 2005 when we went down to the lake house for a relaxed weekend of bourbon, cigars, and golfing. He wasn't much of a golfer but he was a great friend! John enjoyed life like no one I've ever known and was always ready to an adventure. He was truly one of a kind whose legacy will live on in his family and friends.
